GLYCIDYL METHACRYLA T E and G L Y C I D Y L ACRYLA T E are used as copolymers to introduce an epoxy site on the polymeric molecule. They are unique in their ability to retain oxirane structure in the preseru e of water and weak acid or alkali; also, in their non-yellowing characteristics. Secondary cross-linking does not require the use of high temperatures or catalyst. E T H Y L E N E GLYCOL D I M E T H A C R Y L A T E is an effective bifunctional monomer used for obtaining primary cross-linking. When copolymerized with methacrylate esters, acrylic esers, styrene, acrylonitrile, vinyl chloride, chloroprene, or butadiene, the cross-linking so obtained offers solvent resistance, added tensile strength, dimensional stability, and improved hardness.

As you all know by now, the U.S. Department of the Interior has asked for suggestions from the public at large on formulation of a program for development of the federally owned oil shale deposits in Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming (C&EN, Nov. 11, page 17). At the same time, Interior said "that it was taking steps to revoke the old regulations under which oil shale leasing applications have been received. The 1930 Executive Order withdrawing the federal oil shale lands prevents leasing. However, the regulations allow applications for leases to be filed and their processing and required rejection have unnecessarily consumed the time both of applicants " and the Department of the Interior."
When the Frost Is on the Pumpkin The hearings on beer concentrate (see page 32) were bumbling along in routine fashion in the House Ways and Means Committee hearing room. A witness was trying to show that beer concentrate is a distilled spirit because the law classifies as a distiller any person who separates alcoholic spirits from any fermented substance by any process. Under this definition, the crudest process of distillation is freezing a fermented alcoholic product to remove water and thus increase the alcoholic content. "Applejack" is a good example of this, the witness said. You take hard apple cider, set it on the back porch overnight in cold weather, and let it freeze. Then you remove the ice from the top, and you have a distilled spirit. At the mention of this homespun recipe for applejack, somnolent Congressmen sat bolt upright. They pressed the witness for details of the process, and asked such questions as "How does it taste?" The witness allowed that the homemade applejack tasted "pretty good." But he cautiously admitted testing the backwoods booze only on hunting trips during the prohibition era. One Congressman who wanted to
get all the details firmly in hand to get ready for the onset of cold weather got this sage advice: "If you d o n t want to take chances on the weather, put the hard cider in the deepfreeze."
