NEWS - SCRIPTS Allegiance Students of civil engineering at Pittsburgh have set a high example of allegiance to their profession. Informed that a national drive had been launched to raise the big sum required to assure the successful staging of the Centennial of Engineering to b e held in Chicago this summer, the members of the Pitt student chapter of American Society of Civil Engineers immediately voted to subscribe half of the funds they had in their treasury. They sent a check for $10. This example, it is claimed, has encouraged a more liberal attitude among industries that have been requested t o sponsor the program and has thus proved one of the biggest factors in bringing the centennial closer to its goal.

Our softer home making life is putting the squeeze on pigs—their feed isn't what it used to be. Kitchen refuse used to b e an important source of food for pigs, but in these days of garbage grinders and canned and frozen foods, the quantity and quality of refuse is going down. According to Carl Schneider, consulting engineer of t h e N e w Orleans Department of Public Sanitation, collection loads are getting lighter and there are more paper wrappings in rubbish. The increasing sale of kitchen garbage grinders means less for the garbage heap. And what's swill to humans isn't so swell to the pigs any more because its feeding value has probably taken a drop, even on a pound for pound basis, because of less carbohydrates and protein in garbage collected from homes. It all adds up to a hard pinch for the pigs.
