^EW§~§€ltliP¥S A C S ' e r s a t the Top The appointment of Charles Clement French, formerly vice president of Virginia Polytechnic Institute, as dean at the A&M College of Texas was announced recently in this magazine (page 1945). Dr. French has been a member of the A M E R I CAN

has served as an associate of the ACS Committee on Professional Training. In his new position he succeeds M. Thomas Harrington, who has moved up to the presidency of Texas A&M. Dr. Harrington is also a chemist and an ACS member. To t h e best of our knowledge this is the first time the two top posts in an academic institution have been held by ACS members. H i s Ears Turned Red M. H. Baker, w h o sent us the "Dafynitions" that appeared in this column in our issue for July 17, tells us that he was embarrassed by an error which w e made in referring to him as director of research for General Mills. Informing us that he even got a letter from an old friend congratulating him on the "change in status," Mr. Baker has asked us to set the record straight; he is head of the field development section under Frank B. Jewett, Jr., w h o is director of commercial development and business administration. Ralph L. M an ley is director of research. O d e to an Examination S. Morris Kupchan, instructor in chemistry at Harvard, reports that a budding "organiker" ended his final examination in Chemistry 20 recently with the following verses: N o w maybe I should check this stuff, My answers are, I fear, quite rough, But no, I think I've had enough, In fact, too much. I put down what I know, you see, And that I feel is worth a B, Or maybe more, so then I say, Pip, pip, old boy, let's try for A. But then I find to my despair, I search for answers which aren't there. They've floated off to upper air And won't come down, oh please come down. Oh, tell me, little voice from Heaven, Am I right on number seven? D o things react, like there I say, Or do they g o the other way? Hard though I listen, no reply, N o angel's voice from out the sky. So this I guess is best for me, Forget it all; write poetry. "P.S.," concludes an A."
