Cures at room useful from -70°F

temperature, to +600°F

General Electric's expanding family of RTV silicone rubber compounds all cure at room temperature. They contain no solvents; resist temperature extremes, moisture, ozone, weathering and aircraft fuels. Available in a Avide range of viscosities from 120 poises (lower than any other silicone rubber compound) to 12,000 poises. Important application areas include: SEALING AND CAULKING Aircraft manufacturers use RTV for pressure sealing of cabins and cockpits, fire walls, fuel tanks and hot air ducts. Protection for electronic packages is provided by caulking assemblies and sealing seams and lead holes with RTV. ELECTRICAL INSULATION Good electrical properties and outstanding heat resistance have led to RTV's use in coil impregnation and encapsulation of motors and transformers. Can be poured, sprayed, painted, or applied by dipping. Cure times can be varied from minutes to several days. MOLDING AND TOOLING Parts cast in flexible RTV molds reproduce with precision detail. Built-in parting agent assures easy release. RTV eliminates such common problems as excessive shrinkage and separate release agents * R o o m Temperature

Out in Evanston, 111., long-time bicycle rider and chemistry professor Malcolm Dole has won a partly Pyrrhic victory over the law. The conflict turned on a city ordinance against bicycling, which he has been bucking for the past month. The law, in effect since 1958, prohibits cyclists from using 11 of Evanston's busier thoroughfares. Dr. Dole rides his bicycle to Northwestern University every day (five to six miles, round trip) and also uses it to travel around the campus. He says he is not opposed to autos (he owns one). He just doesn't believe cyclists should be shoved off the streets to make room for cars. One Evanston street that is closed to cyclists is Sheridan Road, which ski its the NU campus. There Dr. Dole received a traffic ticket when he continued to pedal along the street after warnings on the restriction. Dr. Dole won a point when his case came up in court. The judge ruled that he could not find the professor guilty, because signs prohibiting cyclists from using Sheridan Road were not posted. The judge also agreed that cyclists may ride for short distances on restricted streets in order to avoid long detours. But since cyclist Dole's arrest, appropriate signs have been posted on Sheridan Rd., and the ordinance against cycling remains on the books. When he was ticketed, Dr. Dole received a 83.00 donation for court costs from two NU astronomy graduate students, evidence of the popularity of his cause. Now, he expects that the Evanston branch of American Youth Hostels and other groups interested in cycling will join in the fight against the restrictive law.

Bright Idea Worth 20,000 Guilders The new Hustinx Research Laboratoria, N.V., of Maastricht, Holland, is offering a prize of 20,000 guilders (more than $5900) for new uses of the Hustinx separatory funnel (see cut) in organic synthesis and analysis. The company intends to mark its formation by contributing the contest results to science and rewarding the person who develops the best idea.

U.S. Patent 2,539,082 and Dutch Patent 618,545, which expire next year, now protect the Hustinx apparatus. Further details on the device are given in Chem. Weekblad, 44, 23, 313 (1948), and the same journal for Nov. 26, 1960, page 295, describes the contest. A special commission (secretary Dr. Ir. S. Spronck, Viertorenstraatl 1, Maastricht, Holland) will handle the Hustinx contest. Entries should be submitted by Oct. 1, 1961.
