Mr. Haskell began his connection with t h e distilling business i n 1900 with the American Distilling Co., Pekin, 111., where he remained until 1921 when he was appointed western sales manager for the U. S. Industrial Alcohol Co. in Chicago. He was later promoted to a general sales managership, w a s made vice president in charge of sales in 1927, and w a s elected a director in 1934.

Committee Formed on Food Composition Α τ T H E request of the Quartermaster -^ General of the United States Army, t h e National Research Council's Food and Nutrition Board has organized a Com mittee on Food Composition, C. A. Elvehjem, chairman, t o collect, coordi nate, and appraise food composition data. T h e committee is to act as the repository and point of dissemination for authentic data on all foods being used or considered for use by all branches.of the military service. Proximate and mineral composition as well as analyses for vitamins A, C, thi amine, riboflavin, and niacin are required a s a basis for nutritional evaluation of these foods. D a t a on new products, proc essed foods, and dehydrated meats, fruits, and vegetables especially are needed. The committee has already enlisted the cooperation of federal and state labora tories throughout the country. However, i t is also aware that a great wealth of food composition data has been accumulated in the course of research and routine analyses by industrial laboratories. I t is therefore appealing to these laboratories of t h e food industries t o make their data active in the war effort. The committee 248

Philip Goldsmith, formerly sanitary engi n e e r in t h e department of public works of the C i t y of N e w York, h a s been a p pointed acting director of t h e Sanitary Engineering Research Laboratory at N"ew York University's College of E n gineering, replacing Rolf Eliassen, w h o i s on leave of absence from the college a n d is serving a s a captain in the United States Army. The research program on t b e effect of electrical grounding on water quality, sponsored b y the Ameri c a n Water Works Association, begun b y Dr. Eliassen, is continuing under t b e direction of Mr. Goldsmith.
