NIAGARA
FILTERS
One 57 sq. ft. Niagara Filter is now doing more work and better work on the filtration of sodium sulfide solution than was previously done on a 185 sq. ft. plate and frame filter. Flow rates of 60 gallons per square foot of filter area per hour are obtained. And this rate is maintained for 16 to 19 hours before it is necessary to clean the Niagara Filter—a production of 48000 to 60000 gallons of sodium sulfide solution con tinuously without interruption. What is more, Niagara Filters have made it possible to eliminate a 3 to 4 hour settling and decanting opera tion. Unsettled batches are now fed directly to the Niagara Filter, resulting in a more uniform product. Reasons for the success of this application, as with all Niagara installations, are the process study that precedes recommendations and the design and con struction of Niagara Pressure Leaf Filters. Niagara Filters are generally of stainless steel con struction throughout (other materials are available), providing the utmost in corrosion resistance. There is no wear on the solderless, stainless steel filter leaves (no cloths used), which provide flow rates 2 to 5 times higher than ordinary cloth-covered presses. Compact, vertical design saves on floor space and lends itself well to steam-jacketing. Entirely enclosed, these filters are leakproof, contamination-proof and ideal for handling toxic, flammable and explosive products. Niagara Filters are showing the way to improved fil tration and lower costs throughout the chemical indus try.
