he special issue of GCCES 2017 (https://pubs.acs.org/ page/iecred/vi/chinese-chemical-engineers-symposium. html) is the invited contributions from the attendees of the ninth Global Chinese Chemical Engineers Symposium (GCCES 2017), July 18−21, 2017, in Hangzhou, China. The GCCES is an annual convention of global Chinese scholars in the chemical engineering discipline that was started in 2009, and it is alternately held in China or overseas. Its objective is to bring leading academic and industrial chemical engineers together to discuss the cutting-edge research in all the areas of the ChE discipline, inspire multidisciplinary collaborations, and promote chemical engineering education. The 2017 event was organized by Zhejiang University and Zhejiang University of Technology and chaired by Profs. Qilong Ren, Youqing Shen, and Xiaonian Li. The conference topics include Molecular Engineering and Transfer Phenomena, Catalysis and Reaction Engineering, Process Intensification and Safety, Biocatalysis and Bioconversion, Chemical Product Engineering, Energy Materials and Engineering, Biomedical Materials and Engineering, Environmental Materials and Engineering, and Separation Materials and Engineering. GCCES 2017 attracted more than 500 high-quality abstracts from domestic and America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific. Nine world renowned experts delivered plenary talks, and more than 100 invited speakers shared their innovative and cutting-edge work with over 600 attendees. The most exciting event in GCCES 2017 was that I&EC Research founded three I&EC Research Distinguished Author Awards. The winnersDr. Jiexin Wang (Beijing University of Chemical Technology), Zuwei Liao (Zhejiang University), and Jijun Zou (Tianjin University)were selected from the attendees by the award selection committee for their innovative research published in I&EC Research over the past two years. The awards were jointly endorsed by the conference chair Prof. Qilong Ren and I&EC Research Editor-in-Chief Prof. Phillip E. Savage. To celebrate the great success of the conference, we invited awardees of the 2017 GCCES I&EC Research Distinguished Author Award, Outstanding Youth Award, and Best Poster Award, as well as known experts, to expand their presentations and contribute to this special issue. The contributions cover the aforementioned conference topics.
