I n s t e a d of a t t e m p t i n g t o express the formula in t h e n a m e b y m e a n s of Greek prefixes ( a s , for Na^I^O?, dis o d i u m t e t r a b o r a t e ) , t h o u g h this is also p e r m i t t e d , or b y a c i d a n h y d r i d e ratios (as, s o d i u m ( 1 : 2 ) b o r a t e ) , t h e g e n e r a l n a m e of t h e a c i d o r salt is u s e d , foll o w e d b y numerals d e n o t i n g t h e n u m ber of a t o m s of t h e m e t a l , t h e c e n t r a l element, and oxygen in the molecule; as, s o d i u m borate ( 2 . 4 . 7 ) .
