Nonvoiding Plastic Squeeze Bottles

The plastic squeeze bottle is one of the most useful deviccs for spraying liquids of all sorts. However, with solvents which have a high vapor pressure increase betwecn 25-30' C , e.g., acetone and ether, a problem arises in that if the temperature of the laboratory rises, the liquid in the bottle is pumped out. I t is possiblo to have a full bottle of acetone at the end of the day and find that it is empty the next morning if the laboratory has heated up. Sometimes the sunlight striking a plastic bottle w~llcause it to warm up sufficiently so that it begins to void. The bottle can be modified so that this aunoyance can be avoided. A small hole is placed so that the index finger covers it when the bottle is held in the hand. The hole can be made easily by use of a hot wire to moll the plastic. When the bottle is not in use, the pressure of the vapors above the liquid in the bottle will he the same as the atmospheric pressure and the bottle will void no more.

The author wishes to thank Mr. Larry Swanson of the Wilson College Pvess for furnishing the photographs.
