NORRIS A W A R D HONORS MOUNT HOLYOKE EMERITAE T H EJames Flack Norris Award of the Northeastern Section of the American Chemical Society was made jointly to Emma Perry Carr and Mary Lura Sherrill on May 9, 1957. ice, Belfast, and Zurich. Dr. Sherrill came to Mt. Holyoke in 1921 after teaching at her Alma Mater, Randolph Macon a t North Carolina. She headed the dmartment of ehemistrv from 1946 to 1954. Her contributions in the field of synthetic organic chemistry have resulted in the preparabion oi many highly purified compounds and possible antimalarial drugs under the auspices of a wartime O.S.R.D. contract. Her studyand-reseml1-inspired travels have taken her to Brussels, Oxford, and Vienna. Both women have continued during their emerita. years the d o votion to chemistry and its teaching which won each of them the Garvan Medal and memhemhip in many professions1 and honorary scientific societies. The Norris Award recognises not only their individual attainments in teaching and research but also the great stimulus engendered by the team of C a r and Sherrill.
