(X-ray Energy Spectrometry) jC W ^ ^ XES is the most rapid way to j t m l iK.M a n a l y z e up t o 81 e l e m e n t s , nondestructively and quantitatively from ppm100% concentration. XES employs a high res o l u t i o n s e m i c o n d u c t o r X-ray d e t e c t o r a n d computerized data reduction system for simul taneous analysis of any number of X-ray emis sions. By combining the KEVEX 0810 high intensity X-ray excitation and detection subsystem with the Tracor-Northern NS-880 computer based analyzer, a most powerful analytical system is at hand. A laboratory technician can generate quanti tative elemental analysis results with a mini mum of sample preparation and a simplified instruction on the NS-880 built-in keyboard. After only several minutes, the complete anal ysis results will be typed out on the teletype and displayed on the CRT display for photo graphing. The NS-880 utilizes an exclusive t e c h n i q u e known as multi-element fitting to accurately resolve the correct peak areas from all ele m e n t s in t h e s p e c t r u m r e g a r d l e s s of t h e amount of overlap between adjacent peaks. This technique is the secret to the accurate, and highly repeatable results achievable with the NS-880. The H e i n r i c h - R a s b e r r y e m p i r i c a l m e t h o d is employed to properly account for any interelement effects. The net result of the corrected data yields the following accurate information for each element: element name, atomic num ber, intensity ratio compared with standard, an uncertainty value based u p o n a c c u r a c y of multi-element fitting operation, the net matrix correction factor and the computed element concentration with accuracy tolerances typed out. The NS-880's design includes built-in magnetic tape cassette for program and data storage as well as automated sequences to reduce your unique analysis p r o b l e m to a simple " D O " command on the keyboard. This cassette sys tem, with its sophisticated Flexmag operating program, makes the PDP-11 computer appear to have a 136,000 word capacity, far exceed ing requirements for X-ray analysis. By simply c h a n g i n g cassettes the 880 c a n utilize the latest programs which are continually being

developed by Tracor Northern to improve and extend this powerful technique. In addition, a free school in 880 operation and data reduction is given in Madison, Wisconsin quarterly for any 880 users. The 880 combines the ultimate in flexibility, superior performance and ease of operation.
