SPARKLESS ELECTRIC LABORATORY STIRRER An Ideal General Purpose Stirrer With Induction Motor
T N A talk recently Joel Hildebrand, President of the ACS, remarked that there is nothing orderly about research, except when it is finally written up for publication. Professors rarely are candid enough to admit that too often the search for knowledge by the scientific method is very illogical and haphazard. The student is given the impression by listening to carefully planned lectures and reading textbook assignments that to be successful in research requires logical reasoning alone. Actually in research when you have a logical approach and your premise is wrong, the truth may escape 3-ou. This does not mean that objectives are not required in research or that tentative hypotheses should not form part of the general plan of attack. In research the accumulation of valid data is fundamental to any research program. Research is a state of mind and a living process and stems from the innate curiosity of humans. Reasoning and imagination are two important facets of the human personality that make it impossible for the builders of those robot calculating brains to outwit man. Imagination can defy reason and permit association of ideas and new concepts to form, which from time to time give us glimpses into new fields that are later developed by minds whose substantial contributions are made by logical, step-by-step proof by reason and experiment. Imagination also is a necessary ingredient in the collating of seemingly isolated facts and data to arrive at a significant conclusion or concept. Many great discoveries have been made by men at an early age before, perhaps, their thinking was prejudiced by the conclusions and mass of evidence accumulated by their distinguished elders. Amassing of data by skilled and well trained scientists is, of course, necessary, and comprises a majority of that which is labeled research. Graduate students and postdoctorates have already learned that technical compe-
