Scandium and Other Metals Distilled scandium metal in ingot form and in precision cast shapes is offered by the St. Eloi Corp. in experi mental quantities. The company is also offering yttrium, lanthanum, cer ium, neodymium, praseodymium, sa marium, europium, gadolinium, ter bium, dysprosium, holmium, erbium, and ytterbium. In addition, thulium, lutetium, and thorium can be supplied in lumps or special shapes on order. C-l Chromatograph Substrate A nonpolar chromatograph substrate solid, to be marketed under the trade name of Fluoropak 80, has been an nounced by the Fluorocarbon Co. De veloped from Teflon tetrafluorethylene, the substance is said to be inert to practically all chemicals, and to have a working range up to 300° C. The company points out that new proc essing methods sharply reduce the flocculating characteristics of tetra fluorethylene. Thus, it adds, the pack ing of columns up to 30 feet in length can be accomplished without difficulty. C-2 Labeled Radiochemical A new carbon-14 labeled radiochemi cal is now available from stock at Tracerlab, Inc. The new compound is acetic anhydride-2-C 14 , which can be used for the study of the chemistry of steroids, hormones, and other com pounds requiring a labeled acetylating agent. Specific activity of the com pound is 1.8 mc./mM. Minimum order is 0.5 mc. at a price of $300 per mc.

standards—strontium-85, niobium-95, and mercury-203—can now be obtained from the National Bureau of Standards. Issued as part of the Bureau's program to supply standards for the physical sci ences, the samples are designed for use in physics, chemistry, biology, and med icine to control processes and maintain accuracy of equipment and apparatus. As of August 15, 1959, the strontium85 sample had a total nominal activity of 2 X 10e disintegrations per second, niobium-95 had 6 X 10n disintegrations per second, and mercury-203 had 107 disintegrations per second. The samples, amounting to about five grams of solution, are sealed in glass ampoules, and are priced at $27 each. NBS points out that the standards can be issued only under the special li censing provisions of the Atomic En ergy Act of 1954, because of their high activities. Therefore it is required that a copy of the purchaser's current AEC byproducts material license be on file at the Bureau. C-6
