fluorine i > determined t h e Berzelius' method t h e results vary and are considerably too low. Seven determinations gave j 6 to 94 per cent. fluorine a s calcium fluoride. 1 repeated the work of Seeman' but without being able to find Lvhere the loss occurred. Fusing the fluoride with sodium peroxide in a nickle crucible gave no better results. Fourteen' determinations, gave 81.1 to 94 per cent. of calcium fluoride tnkeii. A l u mipi 11 nz /lea kr r Method.-In t h e November (1506) Journal,' I described a method for t h e rapid determination of water in butter, of sufficient accuracy for factory purposes, which consisted merely in boiling the water off from a weighed portion of butter contained in a wide test-tube heated by t h e naked flame of a n alcohol lamp. Very shortly thereafter I made a seeniingly slight modification in t h e method, by adopting the use of a n aluminum beaker in place of t h e test-tube-a mere change in utensil, but a change which so greatly improves t h e method, both by faciliPogg. ann.
