Eisen* Department of Chemistry Technion-Israel Institute of Technology Haifa 32000, Israel Received February 8, 1995 Various actinide alkyl and hydride metallocenes effectively and selectively catalyze a variety of C-H bond activation and hydrogenation reactions. In their "cationic" form, these do/P metallocene complexes have recently been shown to be very active catalysts for the polymerization of a-olefins;2 however, very little is known about organoactinide-catalyzed alkyne olig~merization.~ The literature deals mainly with organolanthanides for selective dimerization and cyclodimerizations of alkyne^,^ Ziegler-Natta-type systems for acetylene polymeri~ a t i o n and , ~ various transition metals for selective dimerization of alkynes.6 In this Communication, we report the reactivity and selectivity of some well-defined actinide alkyls with various monosubstituted acetylenes as well as the spectroscopic characterization of some of the key organometallic intermediates in the catalytic cycle. Reaction of Cp*2AcMe~(Cp* = CsMes; Ac = Th, U) with an excess of tert-butylacetylene(benzene-ds, alkyne/Cp*ZAcMe2 ratio 330: 1) results in the regioselective catalytic formation of the head-to-tail dimer 2,4-di-tert-butyl-l-buten-3-yne (1)' and traces of the head-to-head dimer (E)- 1,4-di-tert-butyl-l-buten3-yne (2) (eq l).' In contrast, for HCzCSiMe3, the head-to-
