Nuts to Nernst I A new pH meter free of the tyranny of temperature At last, no Nernst R T / F to foul things up! No need for you to dial in solution temperature. No temperature probe for you to put into every solution along with your pH electrode. The new ORION Model 611 pH Meter is simplicity itself because it uses the pH electrode itself to sense solution temperature and to automatically produce temperature-corrected pH readings. That m e a n s there's one less source of sample carryover, and one less probe to break for one less operating expense.

Another ORION technological coup From the outside the 611 looks like a conventional pH meter except, as you can see, it h a s one less control to fiddle around with: the "Temperature" knob. On the other hand, the inside of the 611 is a whole new ballg a m e in pH meter design. Unique circuits monitor the resistance of the pH electrode's glass m e m b r a n e as it varies logarithmically with the reciprocal of temperature, and automatically converts these variations into temperature corrections for the pH readings.

We call this technique "log R compensation," and it really works for you, with temperature-corrected pH readings regardless of electrode model or s a m p l e type...even if you're using a semi-micro electrode to measure a few drops at the bottom of a test tube, or you're getting t h e pH of a pickle with a spear electrode, or you're finding the surface pH of a culture plate with a flat-ended electrode.

Temperature, mV, and BOD to boot The 611 also lets you read electrode potentials in millivolts and t e m p e r a t u r e in degrees centigrade, using your pH electrode a s t h e temperature sensor. The 611 doubles as a readout meter for B O D measurements, too. A dedicated set of input connectors for t h e O R I O N 97-08 dissolved oxygen electrode lets you switch b a c k and forth between pH, t e m p e r a t u r e , and oxygen readings.
