They seem like perfectly normal surfactants. But put these nonionics up against bacteria and they go all to pieces. (Which is what you might expect from a pair of linear alcohol alkoxylates: quick biodégradation.) Before the breakdown comes, though, they manage to get a lot of things done. As low-foaming surfactants in dishwashing detergents, they hold down water spotting and keep foam from fouling up the machine's rotor and pumps. Even in hard water. In dairy equipment cleaners, they hold onto their defoaming properties in spite of protein and fatty soils. They also make excellent metal cleaners for pressure spray application. And they're useful as wetting agents in textile processing. Our neurotic surfactants are available right now under the names Poly-Tergent® S-305LF (the slightly lower foamer of the two), and Poly-Tergent S-405LF (the slightly better rinser). For details, send a postcard to Industrial Organics, 745 Fifth Avenue, New York, Ν. Υ. 10022. We'll send you everything you'll need to analyze them. Except the couch. CHEMICALS DIVISION POLY-TERGENT® is an OLIN trademark.
