pers cut across a host of scientific disciplines including virology, biol ogy, metals, and other crystals and particulate materials. The 1958 meeting, held at Santa Monica, California, was the first held west of the Rocky Mountains. The registration and number of pa pers presented indicated a strong interest in this field on the West Coast. International activities. As noted above the quadrennial inter national meeting of the electron microscopists will be held at the Uni versity of Pennsylvania. The 1966 meeting will be held in Tokyo. The Fourth International Con gress for Electron Microscopy was held in Germany in 1958 under the auspices of the International Fed eration of Electron Microscope So cieties which includes societies from 13 countries. About 1000 persons from 36 countries gathered at this meeting to hear 400 papers. This was a considerable increase over the 400 registration at the 1954 meeting in London. Education. According to Dr. Rochow, the future of electron mi croscopy depends on education and training. Whatever the field of specialization of chemists, a knowl edge of optical and electron micros copy is helpful. This knowledge may be imparted in special courses or integrated with college courses in chemistry, physics, metallography and biophysics. In addition to physical optics, the general importance of the physiol ogy of the eyes and the psychology of seeing should be imparted. Another form of training for electron microscopists consists of studying electron micrographs and techniques of colleagues. The EMSA displays such items at its meetings and prepares some in the form of traveling exhibits. Efforts are being made to arrange an inter national exchange of such exhibits. EMSA members also take part in efforts to prepare bibliographies, to define terms, and to specify tech niques. This project is being handled by Subcommittee 28 of ASTM's Committee E-l on Micros copy.
