Papers Presented at the Workshop on Ionic Liquids, ICCT, Rostock, Germany, July 28 to August 2, 2002 The 1st IUPAC Workshop on Ionic Liquids: Properties of Ionic Liquids and their Application in Chemical Engineering was held during the 17th IUPAC Conference on Chemical Thermodynamics in Rostock, Germany from July 28 to August 2, 2002. The Workshop was organized by Profs. Andreas Heintz and Kenneth Marsh and had the express purpose to promote a better understanding among chemical researchers of this interesting and potentially useful class of substances. The tone of the Workshop was set by a main lecture presented by Prof. Kenneth Seddon, “Ionic Liquids for Green Industrial Applications”, and an invited lecture by Prof. Joan Brennecke, “Thermodynamics of Ionic Liquids and Gases”. The remainder of the Workshop consisted of 11 contributed lectures, 11 poster presentations, and a Panel Discussion. In the interest of continuing dialogue begun at the Workshop, Prof. Marsh invited presenters of papers that are within the scope of the Journal to submit their manuscripts, which then underwent the same rigorous peer review as regular contributions. This special section contains selected papers on the thermodynamic and transport properties of ionic liquids that were presented at the Conference. Joseph W. Magee Associate Editor JE0304771
