Penholder Adapters for the Perkin-Elmer 710B, 137 IR, and Varian T-60 NMR Instruments Undergraduates in the Rensselaer laboratory courses make frequent and (after initial instruction) largely unsupervised use of a variety of instruments such as infrared and NMR spectrometers, The major problem that we have encountered is maintaining the special pens normally used with these instruments. Also, these pens are expensive to replace.

The accompanying figures illustrate some of the penholder adapters we have made for Perkin-Elmer 7108,137 IR, and Varian T-60 NMR spectrometers. With these adapters, one can use ordinary felt-tipped pens. Our holders are made of Plexiglas" for lightness, have nylon set screws, and are easily constructed in any shop. Holders far the 710B must be thin-walled and then can be used only with thin-barrelled pens (e.g., Bic Bananam), but the other adapters can hold almost any style pen. R. A. Bailey J. W.
