Awards New award established The ACS New Haven Section has established a new award, the Maurice R. Chamberland Award for Applied Chemistry, to recognize outstanding professional achievement of a member of the section in the area of applied chemistry. It will consist of $200 and a bronze plaque to be given biennially. The award perpetuates the memory of Dr. Maurice R. Chamberland, who served the section as chairman in 1974 and in numerous other capacities before his death in December 1975. ACS members may make nominations for the award, and may indeed nominate themselves for it. The nomination should include the name and address as well as a brief statement of the achievement of the candidate, and be submitted by April 15 to Dr. Joseph Reardon, Quantum Inc., Barnes Industrial Park, Wallingford, Conn. 06492.

Dr. Marion D. Francis, senior scientist at the Miami Valley Laboratories of Procter & Gamble Co., has received the ACS Cincinnati Section Chemist of the Year Award. The award recognizes Francis for his research on bones and teeth; his basic research on the effect of stannous fluoride on tooth enamel played an important role in the development of fluoride in toothpaste. Francis has also done research in the treatment of bone disease and the early diagnosis of bone cancer.

terephthalic acid and the direct oxidation of propylene to propylene oxide. Dr. Attila E. Pavlath and Dr. Allen G. Pittman have received the ACS California Section Award in recognition of their contributions to fluorine chemistry. Pavlath and Pittman have collectively devoted 41 years to the advancement of fluorine chemistry, each having written about 100 scientific publications, books,

chapters, etc., and having lectured extensively in the U.S. and abroad. They are jointly involved in the deposition of fluorocarbon polymers on various surfaces using electric glow discharge in order to achieve a soil-repellent surface. Pavlath is a project leader at USDA's Western Regional Research Center in Albany; Pittman is a research leader, also at USDA, WRRC in Albany, and adjunct, professor, division of textiles & clothing, University of California, Davis. Landau

Dr. Ralph Landau will receive the 1977 Winthrop-Sears Medal of the Chemical Industry Association this week in New York City. The medal is awarded to an individual "who by his entrepreneurial action .contributed to the vitality of the chemical industry and the betterment of mankind." Landau cofounded Scientific Design Co., a process development and engineering-construction company, in 1946. When Scientific Design became part of Halcon International in 1963, he became president of Halcon, and in 1975 was elected chairman of the board and chief executive officer, his position to date. Landau is credited with the development of radically new chemical process technology including the "Mid-Century" process for the oxidation of p-xylene to
