Dr. T. Roy Fukuto, professor of entomology and chemistry and insect toxicologist, University of California, Riverside, will receive the 1974 Burdick and Jackson International Award in Pesticide Chemistry. The annual award is given by the ACS Division of Pesticide Chemistry for outstanding contributions to research in the chemistry of pesticides. It will be presented to Fukuto at the fall ACS meeting in Chicago, where he will deliver his award address. A native Californian, Fukuto received his degree in 1946 at the University of Minnesota, and a Ph.D. in organic chemistry from UCLA in 1950. He joined the insect toxicology group of the entomology department, Citrus Experiment Station, Riverside, in 1953; he moved into his present position in 1963.

The Chemical Marketing Research Association has elected the following new officers for 1975-76, beginning July 1: president, Russell C. Kidder, Stauffer Chemical; president-elect, Raymond H. Mattson, Glidden-Durkee; secretary, C. A. Lippincott, Oxirane; treasurer, Donald J. Jorgensen, Monsanto; directors, William E. Marklewitz, Dow Chemical, and John Ober, Shell Chemical.

An international leader in his field—the application of the principles of physical organic chemistry to the biochemical action and metabolism of insecticides—his research work laid the base for exciting recent studies on the identification and synthesis of numerous new pesticide compounds. His research has contributed greatly to the theoretical understanding of the relationship of chemical structure to toxicology, particularly with organophosphorus and carbamate insecticides. Fukuto is the author of more than 120 scientific publications. He soon will publish a monograph on principles of insecticidal action.

Award to Patton Dr. Stuart Patton, Evan Pugh Research Professor of Agriculture, Pennsylvania State University, will receive the ACS Award for Advancement of Application of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, sponsored by International Flavors & Fragrances. The $2000 award and scroll will be presented to Patton by 36

the ACS Division of Agricultural and Food Chemistry at the ACS national meeting in Chicago in August. Patton is well known for his studies of the chemistry and technology of milk products and his work on the role of cholesterol and other fatty materials in atherosclerosis. He has been involved for 18 years in the field of lipid chemistry at the National Institutes of Health Heart Institute programs. Of equal concern was his early interest in pollution of waterways from food processing plants. In the mid-1950's, he developed a process for improving the nutritional value of cheese whey as a feed supplement for animals. This process involved fermenting lactose to lactic acid and converting it to ammonium lactate. In recent years, his areas of greatest interest have been membrane structure, the biochemistry and cytology of lactation, lipid metabolism, and marine biology. He won the coveted Borden Award in 1957. The award winner is a graduate of Pennsylvania State University (1943). He obtained a Ph.D. in dairy science from Ohio State University in 1948. Patton joined the faculty of Penn State in 1949, and was named Evan Pugh Research Professor of Agriculture in 1966.

MCA teacher awards In recognition of their ability to motivate students toward a continuing desire for science education, the Manufacturing Chemists Association (MCA) named the following six chemistry teachers for MCA Chemistry Teacher Awards: Dr. Edward L. AIC Chemical Pioneer Award to codiscoverers Dr. Elizabeth Hazen (left), codiscoverer of the first antibiotic for fungal diseases, died June 24 in Seattle. Earlier this year she and Dr. Rachel Brown (right) received the Chemical Pioneer Award of the American Institute of Chemists. They were the first women scientists ever selected for the award, which was presented "for the pioneering discovery of the fungal antibiotic, nystatin, an important help to physicians and a boon to mankind." Nystatin was first isolated in 1949 when together they were searching for new antibiotics for the New York State Department of Health.

Medal in 1947 for his pioneering efforts in applying pure science to problems of the chemical industry and for his teaching excellence. He was also the recipient of the Perkin Medal (1936), the Gold Medal of the American Institute of Chemists (1949), and the ACS Award in Industrial & Engineering Chemistry (1957). Among his most notable achievements were his theoretical treatment and practical application of distillation, particularly in the petroleum industry; technology of leather and rubber manufacture; thermal cracking; and fluidized bed technology. But of even greater significance, probably, were his creative activities as the guide and inspiration of many students and assistants where his imagination and enthusiasm constituted his greatest work.
