PEOPLE Deaths. ALAN H. NATHAN, 82, died March 15. Nathan worked for more than 34 years as a research chemist with Upjohn Co. A na tive of New York City, he received a B.S. degree from Yale University in 1935 and a Ph.D. degree from Columbia Universi ty. He is survived by his wife, a daughter, and a son. Taft was one of the founding mem bers of the UC Irvine department of chem istry in 1965 and an authority on the corre lation of chemical structure with chemical reactivity. Prior to his work at UC Irvine, Taft spent 15 years as a chemistry profes sor at Pennsylvania State University, pre ceded by postdoctoral work with Louis Hammett at Columbia University. Taft received a B.S. degree in chemistry from the University of Kansas, Lawrence. He completed a Ph.D. degree at Ohio State University, Columbus, where he worked
