EARLY WINTER SESSIONS INTERMEDIATE NMR SPECTROSCOPY Nov. 2 1 - 2 2 , 1974—New York, N.Y. Dr. Joseph B. Lambert Fee: ACS members, $130; rionmembers, $145 Designed for chemists with some practical experience in nuclear magnetic resonance, the course deals with current nmr theories, techniques, and methods that may be used in solving structural and kinetic chemical problems. Topics include: Fourier transform techniques, magnetic equivalance, second-order effects, spin tickling, INDOR, the nuclear Overhauser effect, CIDNP, as well as general discussions of the chemical shift, coupling constants, rate processes, and relaxation phenomena. Question-answer and problem solving sessions supplement the lectures. No particular degree is prerequisite. HETEROGENEOUS CATALYSIS Dec. 5-6, 1974 New York City Dr. Robert L. Burwell, Jr. and Dr. Michel Boudart Fee: ACS members, $130; nonmembers, $145 This course surveys heterogeneous catalytic processes. Chemisorption, chemisorbed reaction intermediates, the texture of catalysts, the nature of reaction sites on the surfaces of catalysts, and the electronic theory of binding are discussed. Also treated are kinetics and other techniques which assist in diagnosing mechanisms, in particular, structure variation, isotopic tracers, stereochemistry, and poisoning. Registrants should have a good foundation in physical chemistry.

MICROPROCESSORS AND MINICOMPUTERS: INTERFACING AND APPLICATIONS Dec. 8-13, 1974—Blacksburg, Va. Dr. Raymond E. Dessy and Jonathan A. Titus Fee: ACS members, $295; nonmembers, $330. This hands-on course is designed to demonstrate the software and hardware principles involved in the application of microprocessors or minicomputers in the laboratory and process control environments. Enrollment is intended for scientists and engineers who wish to use microprocessors or minicomputers in their work, as well as for the manager who wishes to be better informed as to alternatives in automation design and control. Twelve hours of lecture and 15 hours of laboratory focus on the philosophies and jargon of microprocessors, which are revolutionizing the areas of laboratory and plant automation. The course utilizes a phenomenological approach, rather than a detailed electronic/ theoretical one. Some familiarity with small computers is desirable, but not essential. Enrollment limited to 24. LIQUID CHROMATOGRAPHY, THEORY AND PRACTICE Dec. 8 - 1 1 , 1974—Blacksburg,

Va. Drs. Harold McNair, Lloyd R. Snyder, J. J. Kirkland, and C. D. Chandler Fee: ACS members, $295; nonmembers, $330 This laboratory course provides a basic introduction to modern—high speed, high efficiency—liquid chromatography. No background in liquid chromatography is assumed. Lectures and laboratory are integrated to cover theory, instrumentation, and applications, including LLC (partition). LSC (adsorption), ion exchange, and gel permeation. Registrants are

encouraged to bring their own samples. The latest commercially available equipment as well as several custom-built systems are used during the 16 hours of scheduled laboratory work. A bachelor's degree in chemistry, biochemistry, or chemical engineering is sufficient background. Technicians with some experience in chromatography will also benefit. Registration is limited to 25. At the ACS Southwest Regional Meeting

LABORATORY SAFETY—RECOGNITION AND MANAGEMENT OF HAZARDS Dec. 11-13, 1974—Houston, Tex. Norman V. Steere and Maurice Golden Fee: ACS members, $170; nonmembers, $195 A recent addition to the ACS Short Courses Program, this course is designed for laboratory supervisors, research personnel, instructors, and others who have been assigned responsibility for formalizing or improving safety efforts in the laboratory. While emphasis is placed on compliance features of the 1970 Occupational Safety and Health Act and standards in development, greater attention is directed to prevention of incidents and situations which may result in personal injury, occupational illness, fire equipment damage, or interference with laboratory operations. Adequate question-answer periods are provided. Extended time for problem discussion is available during optional evening sessions. To register or obtain complete information on the courses, student discounts, and free enrollment for unemployed ACS members, write or call the Education Department, ACS, 1155—16th Street, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20036. During the two-week period prior to a course, registrations should be made by telephone: (202)872-4508.
