Part 4, Monographs for Reagent Chemicals: General Descriptions, Specifications, and Tests eISBN: 9780841230460 Tom Tyner Chair, ACS Committee on Analytical Reagents James Francis Secretary, ACS Committee on Analytical Reagents

ABSTRACT This monograph for Petroleum Ether provides, in addition to common physical constants, a general description including typical appearance and applications. The monograph also details the following specifications and corresponding tests for verifying that a substance meets ACS Reagent Grade specifications including: Color (APHA), Boiling Range, Residue after Evaporation, Acidity, and Extraction–Concentration Suitability.

CAS No. 8032-32-4

Suitable for general use or in extraction–concentration analysis. Product labeling shall designate the uses for which suitability is represented on the basis of meeting the relevant specifications and tests. The extraction–concentration suitability specifications include only the general use specification for color.

TESTS Color (APHA) [Part 2: Measurement of Physical Properties; Color (APHA); Procedure for Color (APHA)].

Downloaded by CORNELL UNIV on May 16, 2017 | http://pubs.acs.org Publication Date (Web): February 28, 2017 | doi: 10.1021/acsreagents.4261

Boiling Range Distill 100 mL by the method referenced in [Part 2: Measurement of Physical Properties; Boiling Point Range]. The corrected initial boiling point should not be below 35 °C, and the corrected dry point should not be above 60 °C. The barometric pressure correction for petroleum ether is +0.039 °C per mm under 760 mm and –0.039 °C per mm above 760 mm.

Residue after Evaporation [Part 2: Gravimetric Methods; Residue after Evaporation]. Evaporate 100 g (150 mL) to dryness in a tared, preconditioned dish at 70–80 °C, and dry the residue at 105 °C for 30 min.

Acidity Thoroughly shake 10 mL with 5 mL of water for 2 min and allow to separate. The aqueous layer should not turn blue litmus paper red in 15 s.

Extraction–Concentration Suitability Analyze the sample by using the general procedure cited in [Part 2: Chromatography; Recommended Procedures; Extraction−Concentration; Solvent Suitability for Extraction−Concentration].
