Books The Determination of Sulphur-Containing Groups, Vol. 2: Analytical Methods for Thiol Groups. M.R.F. Ashworth. xi + 288 pages. Academic Press Inc., 111 Fifth Ave., New York, N.Y. 10003. 1976. $21.50

This monologue belongs to the long standing series on " T h e Analysis of Organic Materials", edited by R. Belcher and D.M.W. Anderson. This volume, the second on the determination of sulfur-containing groups, presents various analytical methods for compounds in which the thiol group is carried primarily by a carbon atom joined either to hydrogen or to another carbon atom. This comprises alkane- and arenethiols and also includes compounds which contain, in addition to thiol functions, other functional groups such as carboxylic acids, amines, alcohols, etc. However, for compounds containing functional groups other t h a n thiols, only those in which the sulfur function plays a major role are considered. In compilation of analytical methods, the author has chosen to limit the descriptions of each method only to a brief discussion to allow for the introduction of a large

number of methods for which the reader can consult the original literature for full experimental details. T h e analytical information is subdivided into purely physical methods (including chromatographic procedures) and chemical methods. T h e latter methods, mainly classified according to the reaction undergone by the thiol group, comprise Chapters 1-10. T h e remaining three chapters are devoted to physical methods.

Analytical Profiles of Drug Substances, Vol. 5. Klaus Florey, Ed. xi + 560 pages. Academic Press, Inc., 111 Fifth Ave., New York, N.Y. 10003. 1976. $22.50

T h e analytical profiles of 18 drug substances are reported by 43 workers from the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry, research institutions, and pharmacy schools. Each drug is treated in a separate chapter, and most of the chapters are divided into sections of description, physical properties, synthesis, stability and degradation, drug metabolic products— pharmacokinetics, and methods of

analysis. T h e most frequently used methods of analysis discussed are chromatography, spectrophotometry, elemental analysis, colorimetry, and titration.

Other countries add 5%) Calibration in Air Monitoring. Special Technical Publication 598. 356 pages. 1976. $33

Presented in this book are the stateof-the-art of calibration techniques for instruments used for continuous monitoring of ambient air quality and a critical examination of the means of traceability to known standards. It also provides an introduction to the field for new users of monitoring instruments, as well as an insight into the requirements for their calibration and some preferred techniques.

Pharmacia Peristaltic Pump P-3 A compact pump electronically controlled for constant liquid flows in chromatography and gradient formation

You can • obtain three different flow rates at the same time through the three individually tensioned pumping channels • change tubes in seconds with the snap-in cassette • forget about pulsation thanks to the large driven rollers • rely on a constant motor speed, electronically compensated for load and temperature • use any flow rate between 0.6 and 400 ml/h per channel with the same gear box • reverse the flow instantly • push for maximum flow and clear pump lines rapidly For free descriptive
