Non-Radioactive Tagging Agents A series of materials, called Recomix, for non-radioactive tagging of other materials is available from Nuclear Corp. of America. The company says that an individualized Recomix can be made for each user and specific use. The basic detection technique is spectrographic analysis, and other tech niques can be applied as dictated by the particular matrix material. Spectral identification will be unique for each Recomix furnished, according to the company, and it will be selected so as to avoid possibility of confusion with contaminants. Typical applications are said to be in tagging alloy heats, glass formulations, cement mixes, de tergents, and others. C-l Biacetyl Specially purified biacetyl is offered by Burdick & Jackson Laboratories for in situ synthesis of nickel dimethylglyoxime in the presence of Ni (II) ion. The company says that large, pure, readily filterable, and easily washed crystals of the dimethylglyoxime are obtained by the technique of precipi tation from homogeneous solution. Additional advantages for this method are said to be elimination of interfer ence by copper, cobalt, and iron. The biacetvl is designated PF/HS-Grade. C-2 Fluorescent Labeling Powders Three fluorescent labeling powders which can be used to tag proteins are now available from the California Corp. for Biochemical Research. They are dimethylaminonaphthalenesulfonyl chlo ride, fluoresceinisothiocyanate, and Lissamine Rhodamine B-200. The company offers a free reprint which describes a technique for using these substances for labeling antibodies. C - 3 Radioactivity Standards Bismuth-207 and barium-133 are available for the first time from Nu clear Science and Engineering Corp. as the carrier-free radioisotope 99%+ radiochemically pure. Both, the com pany says, are often used as long-lived standards. Also available are standard solutions of 99%+ radiochemically pure beryllium-7, sodium-22, manganese-54, iron-

55, zinc-65, strontium-85, yttrium-8S, and cadmium-109. These cyclotronproduced standards are available every Thursday, and no AEC license is re quired for their use. They are shipped in a flame sealed ampoule with a known volume of 3 ml. and with a standardiza tion certificate. C-4
Anion Exchanger DEAE-Sephadex, the diethylaminoethylether of Sephadex, is now being distributed by Pharmacia Fine Chem icals, Inc. The material is said to have a high molecular capacity which can be used even for large molecules. Its glob ular structure enables a fast flow rate and makes the material relatively easy to pack in a column. It has a low de gree of nonspecific adsorption and per mits higher ionic strength in the eluant. The company says DEAE-Sephadex
is especially useful for serum proteins, peptides, nucleic acids, nucleotides, and polysaccharides. The material comes in two porosities, each in three particle sizes. C-5 Radioisotope Kit A kit of five commonly used radio isotopes, the Model RNS-110 radio nuclide set, is offered by Nuclear-Chi cago Corp. The isotopes included are lead-210/bismuth-210, 10 ml. with an activity of 10 μΰ.; cobalt-60, 10 ml. with an activity of 1 μα.; cerium-144/ praseodymium-144,-5 ml. with an activ ity of 1 /ne; zinc-65, 5 ml. with an ac tivity of 10 μα.; and carbon-14, 5 ml. with an activity of 50 ^c. The kit also contains a tube of 100 aluminum sample pans, two micro pipets, a Clay-Adams syringe, and an instruction manual explaining how to handle the tracer reagents. The price of the kit is $59.50. C-6
