Photochemical Oxidation of [ I r ( ( C3,N’-Hbpy) ( b p ~ ) ~ ) ]by ~ ’ Redox Quenching Anny Slama-Schwok and Joseph Rabani* Energy Research Center and the Department of Physical Chemistry, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Jerusalem 91 904, Israel (Received: June 18, 1985: In Final Form: August 28, 1985)

Aqueous solutions containing [ Ir( (C3,N’-Hbpy)(bpy),)]3+ were studied at room temperature by steady and pulsed laser techniques in the presence of electron acceptors. The acceptors used were S20E2-ions, methylviologen (as nitrate), [Co(NH,),Fl2+, )I4+the last produces a complex. The quenching and Fe3+(as perchlorate). The first three produce [Ir((C3,N’-Hbpy)(bpy),while complex, and product decay rate constants, as well as the observed spectra, are reported. The [Ir((C3,N’-Hbpy)(bpy)2)]4+ reported here for the first time, is capable of oxidizing CI- to CI,-. In the absence of additives other than [Co(NH3),FI2+ it is stable at pH
