FOREWORD The A D V A N C E S IN C H E M I S T R Y SERIES was founded in 1949 by the Amer­ ican Chemical Society as an outlet for symposia and collections of data in special areas of topical interest that could not be accommodated in the Society's journals. It provides a medium for symposia that would other­ wise be fragmented because their papers would be distributed among several journals or not published at all. Papers are reviewed critically according to ACS editorial standards and receive the careful attention and processing characteristic of A C S publications. Volumes in the A D V A N C E S IN C H E M I S T R Y SERIES maintain the integrity of the symposia on which they are based; however, verbatim reproductions of previously published papers are not accepted. Papers may include reports of research as well as reviews, because symposia may embrace both types of presentation.

ABOUT THE EDITORS CHARLES KUTAL is a professor and Head of the Department of Chemistry at the University of Georgia. He received his Ph.D. and M . S . from the University of Illinois and his B.S. from Knox College. He is the recipient of the Undergradu­ ate Teaching Award and the Chemist of the Year Award of the Northeast Georgia section of the American Chemical Society. Kutal has authored more than 70 articles and chapters dealing with the photochemistry of inorganic and organometallic compounds, solar energy conversion and storage, and photosensitive polymer materials. He is coeditor of the books Solar Energy: Chemical Conversion and Storage and Electron Transfer in Biology and the Solid State.

NICK SERPONE is a professor and Director of the Laboratory of Pure and Applied Studies in Catalysis, Environment, and Materials in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Concordia University. He received his Ph.D. from Cornell University and his B.Sc. from Sir George Williams University. He was the founder and the first Director of the Canadian Center for Picosecond Laser Spectroscopy (1981-1987). He is the holder of one patent and has authored more than 180 journal articles and review papers, coedited three books, and jointly translated one book (French to English). He was visiting professor at the University of Bologna, Italy (1975-1976), an invited professor at the Ecole Polytech­ nique Fédérale of Lausanne, Switzerland (1983-1984), and a visiting pro­ fessor and Directeur de Recherche at the Ecole Centrale de Lyon, France (1990—1991). His principal research interests are in heterogeneous photocatalysis, environmental and inorganic photochemistry, picosecond laser spectroscopy, and imaging science.
