on these links, it should be clear that these represent the same broad distribution of institutions and scientific topics that are already apparent in Table 1 and Figure 1. From this analysis it should be apparent that physical chemistry is a vibrant topic in India, with many highly visible papers published in JPC A, B, C, and Letters and with Indian scientists actively involved in many aspects of Journal publication activities. We look forward to continued involvement and engagement from the Indian scientific community.

his Virtual Issue highlights the science and publications in The Journal of Physical Chemistry (JPC) associated with scientists in India. JPC is very much an international journal, with publications about equally divided into three areas: North and South America, Europe and Africa, and Asia including India. In fact, JPC is one of the largest journals in the ACS portfolio in terms of submissions and publications of papers from India. Publications from India began in 1915 (Ghosh, J. C. J. Phys. Chem. 1915, 19, 720−733; who reported the properties of strong electrolytes, comparing basicity with electrochemical properties). Incidentally, in 1939 Sir J. C. Ghosh was appointed Director of the Indian Institute of Science Bangalore, immediately after Sir C. V. Raman, and played an important role in organizing modern scientific institutions in India. Ghosh and others continued publishing in JPC in the 1920s and 30s, but there was little activity after that until the 1970s. The early papers were primarily connected to thermodynamics, kinetics, colloid properties and catalysis, and then quantum mechanics, and photochemistry became important in the 1960s and thereafter. Among highly cited papers are several by C. N. R. Rao beginning about 1960. Publications from India rose significantly during the period 2003−2010, going from under 100 per year to over 300. Since then, publications have risen more slowly, going from 360 papers/year in 2012 to 410 in 2016. During the last five years (2012−2016), ∼6% of all the papers published in JPC A, JPC B, JPC C, and JPC Letters originated from authors located in India. This corresponds to 1937 papers, and of these, 16% were published in JPC A, 36% in JPC B, 41% in JPC C, and 7% in JPC Letters. Figure 1 shows the distribution of papers associated with the 12 sections in JPC A, B, C (see, e.g., http://pubs.acs.org/page/ jpcafh/about.html). This shows a broad distribution of research areas that roughly corresponds to the distribution of these topics worldwide. One measure of what institutions in India are active in publishing in JPC is shown in Table 1, which shows JPC manuscripts downloaded during 2012−2016 by institution (only the top 25 are listed). The Journal has a number of direct ties to India, as summarized in Table 2. There have been two Festschrift issues of JPC for scientists from India: C. N. R. Rao (1994) and Biman Bagchi (2015). Two scientists are current Senior Editors of JPC, Kankan Bhattacharya and Narayan Pradhan, and over the last 20 years, there have been 16 Editorial Advisory Board members from India. There have also been many Feature Articles, Review Articles in JPC A, B, C and, for JPC Letters, Perspective Articles by authors from India. Table 3 highlights some of the highest-cited Feature and Review Articles for JPC A, B, C, based on Web of Science data. Table 4 provides some very recent (2017) Feature and Perspective articles. Table 5 summarizes some of the top-cited and/or top-accessed articles having corresponding authors from India published in JPC A, B, C, and Letters during the 2012−2016 period. Citations were based on Web of Science data, while article access data is from ACS Publications. These papers are provided with hyperlinks for easy access to the Journal publication.
