Picric acid reacts, often explosively, with combustible and flammable materials, reducing agents, copper, lead, zinc, mercury, and other metals. See Bretherick’s Handbook of R ­ eactive Chemical Hazards for details and for other incompatibilities. When dry, picric acid is a high explosive comparable to TNT. When kept moist, about 10% (minimum) water, picric acid is less hazardous. The dry acid is shock, friction, and heat sensitive. The metal salts of picric acid are dangerously sensitive to shock, friction, and heat. Non-metallic salts are less so.

Typical symptoms of acute exposures:

In the eyes: inflammation, pain. On the skin: inflammation, yellowness, pain. If inhaled: sore throat, coughing. If ingested: abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea. Principal target organ(s) or system(s):

Eyes, skin, respiratory system, central nervous system, kidneys, liver, blood.

Storage Requirements Store separate from flammables, combustibles, and other reducing agents in a locked location. Inspect frequently to insure that the picric acid remains moist.

Additional Remarks Dry picric acid is hazardous; it should be kept moist (10% minimum) at all times. If it becomes dry, do not attempt to moisten it; do not open the container. Destroy it in the unopened container in a safe manner as described in the MSDS or as otherwise specified by the supplier.
