of Technology, Pittsburgh, Pa. 15213. American Petroleum Institute stand ard hydrocarbons are available only in units of 5 ml, each sealed in vacuum in a special glass ampoule with internal vacuum break-off tip. Cost is $90/ unit.

Nine compounds have been added to the list of API standard samples now available. A list of the 343 compounds may be obtained upon request from the API Sample Office, Carnegie Institute

Standard Reference Materials The National Bureau of Standards has certified new standard reference materials for oxygen in steel and oxygen in titanium alloys and a butyl rubber Mooney viscosity standard. I t has also reissued plutonium and butyl rubber standards. Five standards (three steel and two titanium base) are certified for oxygen content and homogeneity and are in tended for calibrating vacuum fusion or inert gas fusion equipment in corre lating oxygen content of metal for fab ricating and production purposes. The steels are No. 1090, ingot iron; 1091, stainless steel (AISI Type 431); and 1092, vacuum-melted steel. The two titanium-base standards are No. 355, titanium, and 356, a 6 aluminum, 4 vanadium alloy. The standards are S20 per unit and are supplied in the form of rods. The new butyl rubber standard is certified for a Moonev viscositv of 74.5 ± 1.5 ML 1 + 8 (100° C). The ML 1 + 8 (100° C) indicates that the Mooney viscosity was determined using a large rotor ; the rubber was heated at 100° C for 1 minute prior to operation of the rotor and was sheared for 8 min utes at 100° C before readings were made. The standard is available in 27-kg units for $95. A catalog and price list of standard reference materials may be obtained by writing for NBS Misc. Publ. 260, Super intendent of Documents, IT. S. Gov't. Printing Office, Washington, D . C. 20402, 45 cents.

We are HEADQUARTERS for SILYLATION REAGENTS

Esterification Agent A new derivatization agent, pivalic anhydride, is used to prepare N,0-dipivalymethyl esters of thyroid hor mones to provide faster and more ac curate analyses at very low blood serum levels. The use of these derivatives overcomes the most serious shortcom ings of the commonly used proteinbound iodine and butanol extractable iodine procedures. Pierce Chemical Co., Inc., P. O.
