PIPERAZINE could be just the starting material or intermediate you're s e e k i n g The chemical structure above shows piper­ azine to be a diethylenediamine comprising a sixmembered heterocycle with the nitrogens in the para position. In the pure state, it is a white, hygroscopic, crystalline solid, with an odor typical of amines. Jefferson is the largest producer of piperazine and a number of forms are marketed including the anhydrous and hydrated products, as well as the salts of organic and inorganic acids. Although piperazine is unquestionably the leading anthelmintic for swine and poultry, it has numerous other practical pharmaceutical and industrial uses. Anhydrous piperazine, supplied as free flowing flakes, is an excellent starting material for antifilarials, antihistamines, tranquilizers, anal­ gesics, sedatives, and hormones; therapeutics for

gout, arthritis, and rheumatism; treatment of burns, shock, hypertension; traumatic and hem­ orrhagic shock; anticonvulsant and antispasm o d a n t ; and a n t i t u m o r d r u g s . Its s t r u c t u r e suggests its industrial use as an intermediate for rubber accelerators, antioxidants, corrosion in­ hibitors, surface-active agents, polymers of polyamides, polyurethanes, and polyureas; synthetic fibers; peptizing agent; protection against fading of printed fabrics; preparation of dyes.
