PLASTIC POLISHES IMPROVED BY ALKYL ALKANOL AMINES The trick of making plastic polishes that stand up well, yet come off easily when they're supposed to, can be simplified with alkyl alkanol amines. Take acrylic polishes, for example. If you react acrylic acid with a dialkyl alkanol amine... say diethylaminoethanol. . . you get a dialkylaminoalkyl acrylate monomer that does a fine job in emulsion polymer formulations. The amino group gives the coating increased solubility in mildly acidic media, for easy removal. . . and aids its ability to resist alkaline cleaners used on the polished surface.

TERTIARY AMINES SPEED ROUTE TO QUAT NH4 COMPOUNDS Impressive sales being chalked up by a number of quaternary ammonium-based products suggest that it may be a good time to renew your acquaintance with the quats. Steady gains are forecast for such established moneymakers as swimming pool sanitizers, algaecides and bactericides. Textile softeners, waterproofing agents and processing aids are helping manufacturers make consumers more fabric-conscious. Quat-type surfactants are steadily finding profitable specialized uses. Whatever market you've got your eye on, you'll find that making quaternaries with Pennsalt tertiary amines is a direct, uncomplicated, economical process. The reaction, using an alkyl halide, is typified by: R 3 N + R'X->· (R , R 3 N)+X-. With the variety of new alkyl halides, aromatic halides and related compounds constantly being offered,

the possibilities for specific end-product properties range far and wide. For example, if you react trimethylamine (or triethyl or tripropyl, for that matter) with dodecylbenzyl chloride (C12H25-C6H4-CH2C1), you get a quat that performs well not only as a bactericide and bacteriostat, but as a corrosion inhibitor as well. We hasten to add that our line of amines isn't restricted to the tertiaries. Pennsalt actually offers the widest line of lower alkyl amines available today—methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl and amyl . . . primaries, secondaries and tertiaries. You can count on our unbiased help in choosing the one amine that's most economical for your application. For a complete listing of Pennsalt amines and alkyl alkanol amines, with condensed technical and shipping data, just drop us a note.

Speaking of acrylics, our dimethyl and diethylaminoethanol offer some highly specific advantages to acrylic emulsion paints, baking primers and enamels. We'll gladly provide you with technical and application data, evaluation samples and help in selecting . . . from our broad line of lower alkyl alkanol amines . . . the ones that best fit your needs.

PENNSALT SERVICE HELPS YOU GAIN ECONOMIES OF HF One of our staunch beliefs is that the CPI man doesn't breathe who wouldn't leap at the chance to slice a sizeable chunk off his costs. That's one of the reasons we periodically reiterate a rather simple . . . and demonstrable . . . statement: the handling of hydrofluoric acid presents no serious limitation to its vast potential. If you're now paying high prices for bifluorides, you'll find that H F is a more direct and economical way to make fluorides and double fluorides . . . as well as fluoborates, fluophosphates, many other inorganic salts, and fluoro-organics. And H F is an excellent solubilizer for a wide range of organic and inorganic compounds . . . provides a medium for reactions that are otherwise difficult or impossible.

We could rave on about HF's other abilities . . . as a catalyst, for example. The main point, though, is that you can use it, with a degree of safety equal to that of the many other active chemicals in common use today. Of course, you have to know how to handle H F . That's where we come in.
