BOOKS slight blemishes in the successful achievement of the book's stated goal. Chapters 1-6 are concerned with the theory, equations, systems, techniques, and applications of the light detection and ranging (lidar) and the differential absorption lidar (DIAL) techniques. Both scattering and absorption lidar and DIAL are treated. The theory and equations are presented in a concise form and are logically developed. Applications include atmospheric, oceanic, and terrestrial examples of environmental and resource monitoring. Special attention is given to the timely subjects of oil spills and atmospheric ozone. A fascinating example is cited of using lidar "as an early warning approach" to vegetation stress; the example is relevant because environmental methodology ideally should monitor processes before harmful effects are manifested. A potential application to acid rain problems is immediately apparent. Chapter 7 concludes the book with a brief treatment of the special case of fiber-optic remote sensing. The recent emergence of fiber-optic technology in the communications industry presents the possibility of minimizing the lidar

Laser Remote Chemical Analysis. Raymond Measures, Ed. xi + 546 pp. John Wiley & Sons, Inc., 605 Third Ave., New York, NY 10158-0012. 1988. $80 Reviewed by Donald Gurka, Center for Process Analytical Chemistry, BG-10, University of Washington, Seattle, WA 98195 The stated goal of this book is to describe how lasers can be used to chemically analyze the environment at a distance. The theory, components, techniques, and mechanics to achieve this goal are well presented. At times, however, the authors use deficient chemical nomenclature. For example, Chapter 5 contains several references to alkali metal atoms and ions as "alkalis" and states at one point that atomic sodium is a form of sodium compound, and a reference in Chapter 7 states that "a coated optical fiber is permeable to protons." These are, however, only

problems associated with the distancedependent decrease in radiative power as well as those associated with beam path interferences. Sensors and instrumental configurations for optical fiber systems are discussed along with their implications for remote sensing. This book should be the definitive single volume on the subject of laser remote sensing for some time to come. However, the reader should keep in mind that the application of the described techniques to global and regional pollution and to resource monitoring may be hampered by economic factors.
