FOREWORD ADVANCES IN CHEMISTRY SERIES was founded i n 1949 by the American Chemical Society as an outlet for symposia and collections of data i n special areas of topical interest that could not be accommodated i n the Society's journals. It provides a medium for symposia that would otherwise be fragmented, their papers distributed among several journals or not pub lished at all. Papers are reviewed critically according to A C S editorial standards and receive the careful attention and proc essing characteristic of A C S publications. Volumes i n the A D V A N C E S I N C H E M I S T R Y S E R I E S maintain the integrity of the symposia on which they are based; however, verbatim repro ductions of previously published papers are not accepted. Papers may include reports of research as well as reviews since symposia may embrace both types of presentation.

of
Chemical Engineering and Director of the Polymer Science and Engineering Program at Polytechnic Institute of N e w York. After receiving a B . C h . E . degree i n 1958 from Seoul National University i n Korea, he came to M . I . T . i n 1961 for graduate study, , where he received his M . S . (1962) and * ( ) degrees i n Chemical E n gineering. W h i l e working i n industry as a process analyst and systems engineer, he continued graduate studies part time, first i n Electrical Engineering (majoring i n Auto matic C o n t r o l Theory) at the Newark College of Engineering and then i n Mathematics at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sci ences of N e w York University. H e earned two additional degrees: an M . S . i n Electrical Engineering and an M . S . i n Mathematics. H e joined the faculty of the then Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn i n 1967 as Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering, and was pro moted i n 1972 to F u l l Professor. H e was H e a d of the Chemical E n g i neering Department from 1974 to 1982 at Polytechnic Institute of New York. His research interests include polymer rheolagy, polymer processing, process control, mathematical modeling of chemical processes, and polymerization reaction engineering. More specifically, his current re search activities include rheological characterization of multiphase polymeric systems, processing of multiphase polymeric systems, and structure-property-processing relationships i n polymeric systems. H e has written over 170 technical papers and two research monographs, "Rheology i n Polymer Processing" (Academic Press, 1976) and " M u l t i phase F l o w i n Polymer Processing" (Academic Press, 1981).
