Continuing education for chemists, technologists, engineers, and other professionals in research, devel&jjii^^ and characterization. Workshops designed W l i f o r m tk^ with experience in a field as well as newcomers discussed by infamous specialists in their fields. Learn the fundamentals at the workshops and hear about the latest advances at the companion PMSE symposia at the ACS meeting. WORKSHOPS AT THE BOSTON ACS MEETING AUGUST 23, 1998* 1. Biomedical Polymers, Prof. Sam Huang, University of Connecticut, Chemistry Department, Storrs, CT 06269. Phone: 860-486-4627, Fax: 860486-2981, [email protected]. Workshop will consider fundamentals of Design and Synthesis, Properties and Lifetimes, Surface Characterization, Biocompatibility, Implants,Tissue Engineering, and Biosensitive Applications. 2. Small-Angle Scattering in Polymer Processing and Characterization, Dr. John Barnes, NIST, Bldg 224, Rm.A209, Gaithersburg, MD 20899, Phone: 301 975-6786, Fax: 301-977-2018, [email protected]. Volunteers from the American Crystallographic Association and the International Union of Crystallography will be conducting a tutorial session to provide an orientation for students and for workers in analytical laboratories who may require an understanding of the ways in which SAS methods can expand their ability to characterize polymers.

3. Toughening of Plastics Workshop, Prof. Albert Yee,The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI 48109-2136. Phone: 734-763-2445, Fax: 734-7634788, [email protected]. The aim of this workshop is to provide some of the fundamental basis required in understanding the fracture and failure processes of plastics and rational toughening strategies. The workshop will include sessions that provide fundamentals to rheological and interfacial control of blend morphology. •Registration: $475 prior to July 15,1998, and $525 after July 15,1998. Special discount registration for students and postdocs: $100 prior to July 15,1998.

PROSPECTIVE WORKSHOPS AT THE ANAHEIM ACS MEETING March 21, 1 9 9 9 * 1. Polymer Materials Reliability 2. Conductive Polymers $ Registration fees higher after February 15,1999. Check Web site for details.
