FOREWORD The ADVANCES IN CHEMISTRY SERIES was founded in 1949 by the American Chemical Society as an oudet for symposia and collections of data in special areas of topical interest that could not be accommodated in the Society's journals. It provides a medium for symposia that would otherwise be fragmented because their papers would be distributed among several journals or not published at all. Papers are reviewed critically according to ACS editorial standards and receive the careful attention and processing characteristic of ACS publications. Volumes in the ADVANCES IN CHEMISTRY SERIES maintain the
integrity of the symposia on which they are based; however, verbatim reproductions of previously published papers are not accepted. Papers may include reports of research as well as reviews, because symposia may embrace both types of presentation.

and coatings at North Dakota State University. He received a bachelor of science degree in chemistry from Louisiana State University in 1959 and a P h . D . degree from Purdue University in 1964. From 1963 to 1980, he worked for the Union Carbide Corporation at its South Charleston Research and Development Center. His research interests have included almost all aspects of water-soluble polymers: kinetics and synthesis by free-radical processes, controlled substituent placement in the derivatization of carbohydrate polymers, solution and interfacial adsorption and viscosity behavior of both polymer types, and meaningful extrapolation of such fundamental data to the performance of water-soluble polymers in application formulations. H e has published more than 70 technical papers and received several patents in these areas of study.
