Polystyrene Designs

What resulted when two young designers, Dolby and Adler, let AMOCO Polystyrene dictate the design for a line of partyware.

Dolby We also felt polystyrene was most acceptable with a clean contemporary look. It doesn't come off phony. After that decision, the only problem left was a matter of understanding how the partyware would be used.

Dolby For one thing, it began to acquire a validity of its own. Too often, polystyrene has been used as an inexpensive substitute for other materials.

Dolby Of course, the color was important. And Amoco's wide selection of colors and grades helped. We decided on a smoky color in a general purpose grade.

Adler We especially wanted it to have a tactile validity. That's why we gave each piece a ribbed bottom. To differentiate it in feel from, say, the typical smooth, thin-walled polystyrene product.

Adler It's good looking and enables the partyware to be produced economically. It could be bought a lot cheaper than renting good china from a rent-all company. Yet semipermanent. Very presentable for several informal buffets.

Adler Infrequently. That is, most of the time it would be stored in a cabinet. That means it had to be compact. So we designed a stacking arrangement which allowed it to be stored easily. Served easily. As well as shipped and displayed easily.

When· designing your products, keep in mind that Amoco now markets polystyrene, polypropylene, and a wide variety of other materials for use in plastic and polyester products.
