Portable pH Meters Have High Accuracy Coleman and E. H. Sargent offer units that can be used either in laboratories or in the field Two portable p H meters have been introduced to extend the range of application for this type of instrument. Both Coleman Instruments and E. H. Sargent now offer pH meters that can be used in the laboratory as well as in the field. Although accuracies for the instruments differ, each provides the same degree of accuracy in the laboratory as it does in the field. Coleman Instruments has a portable, high-accuracy pH meter. The compact new meter weighs only eight pounds and it operates from either a battery or alternating-current power lines. It is about the size of a small attache case and it is accurate to within 0.001 pH at the standardization point, according to the May wood, 111., instrument maker. Known as the Coleman Model 37 Medallion p H meter, the new instrument uses solid-state circuitry and a
rechargeable battery to achieve its compactness and light weight. All the circuitry is solid state except an electrometer tube used for the input stage. The single nickel-cadmium battery used in the Coleman instrument replaces the multiple dry cell arrangement common in other battery-powered meters. Also this nickel-cadmium battery can be recharged up to 500 or more times. As each charge gives about 20 hours' operation, a single battery will last about 10 years, Coleman says. The battery is recharged simply by plugging the instrument into alternating-current lines, setting a switch, and leaving it overnight. The Model 37 instrument can also run directly off the power lines. But its ability to run off its battery gives another advantage in addition to
portability. It increases accuracy by freeing the instrument from the stray fields and other undesirable effects associated with alternating-current power lines. To further increase accuracy, the instrument measures p H by a potentiometric null-balance system. This eliminates any meter error. The measurements are shown on a digital readout with the third decimal place being read from a dial. The new Coleman instrument costs $530. For use just on alternatingcurrent lines, when the battery is not needed, the price is $495. E. H. Sargent (Chicago, 111.) offers two versions of its meter. One version can be used with a mercury-cell battery for field operation; The other can be used in the lab, and has a Zener-referenced power supply. Both versions have the same accuracy— ±0.03 p H units when measuring within 4 pH units of the standardization point. Absolute accuracy at any place on the scale is ± 0 . 0 5 p H units. Prices vary, according to the accessories required, from $255.00 to $295.00, Sargent says.

Introduction of a second rare-earth red phosphor for color television tubes —this one from Westinghouse—follows a breath behind the disclosed details of the first—that one from General Telephone & Electronics (C&EN, Nov. 9, page 67). The latter, europiumactivated yttrium vanadate had, however, been in commercial use by GT&E's Sylvania subsidiary since June. Westinghouse's new phosphor is europium-activated yttrium oxide. Westinghouse has applied for patents on the phosphor and on a process to make it. Both Westinghouse and GT&E use the rare-earth phosphors instead of the conventional silveractivated zinc cadmium sulfide redemitting phosphor. GT&E says that its ratio is one ion of europium to 19 ions of yttrium. Westinghouse, however, will not disclose the ratio used because of possible patent uses. Westinghouse says that it is discussing use of its red phosphor with color TV manufacturers and can supply the material in commercial quantities now. The company adds that the phosphor will be made at its Bloomfield, N.J., facility.

reactor's superheater has begun near Sioux Falls, S.D. Engineers and physicists from Allis-Chalmers' atomic energy division and Northern States Power Co. began installing 412 tubular fuel elements containing highly enriched uranium dioxide into the superheater core of the plant's reactor vessel. Each tubular element for the superheater is about 1 in. in diameter and consists of two concentric fuel tubes 6 ft. long. The Pathfinder achieved initial chain reaction on March 24, and has been operating for test purposes only since Sept. 18. It was shut down to permit safe loading of the superheater.
Evaporated-layer cadmium sulfide transducers that produce either transverse or longitudinal waves have been made by a new technique at Bell Telephone Laboratories. The vacuum deposition process is a continuation of the deposition method reported by Dr. N. F. Foster of Bell Labs last year. In the process, cadmium sulfide is heated in a boat and evaporated to be deposited on a metal-plated surface. When the cadmium sulfide strikes the surface at an oblique angle, transducers are formed that generate predominantly transverse waves. Deposited at right angles, transducers are formed that produce longitudinal
waves. This effect arises from an alignment of the cadmium sulfide with the vapor beams. Previously it was necessary to suppress unwanted modes by using acoustical filters and other polarization techniques. Now this is done by the transducers themselves, according to Bell Labs.

G O O D WAY TO RETARD FLAME
Use Neville Unichlor@in Your Formulae Among the principal reasons for using UNICHLOR, Neville's chlorinated paraffin, in your formulae is its ability, when combined with small amounts of antimony trioxide, to retard flame in such products as plastisols, paints, fabric coatings, adhesives and rubber goods. This quality is constantly becoming more important in product manufacture. Many state and city building codes now require flame retardant materials in critical areas, and the
armed forces are specifying flame retardant products in increasingly varied applications. Because of the direct relationship of chlorine content to flame retardance in a formula, Neville has developed several grades of UNICHLOR which will materially increase the chlorine content of your product without loss of plasticity, tack or other valuable assets. If you would like further information on UNICHLOR write for our new booklet.

The symmetrical molecular cage structure of Triethylenediamine and its freedom from steric hindrance makes the electron pairs at the "bridgehead" nitrogen atoms readily accessible. This gives I OABCO an unusual ability to catalyze reactions of isocyanates | with compounds containing active hydrogen atoms.
DABCO® catalyst gives maximum control in processing and optimum final properties of rigid urethane foam lowest K factors. Although highly efficient, DABCO permits a wide latitude of control, delaying gelation or hardening of the foam until rise is complete. This is important when rising foam must flow about intricate molds, around corners, and even knit with foam rising in the opposite direction. Because the foam remains flowable, all spaces get filled. The shearing action of the rising foam is also reduced. On pour-in-place jobs, ultimate adhesion is increased, while in molded forms, striations decrease and uniform surfaces result. For better processing conditions . . . maximum control . . . finer foams . . . no other catalyst performs like DABCO because no other catalyst is built like DABCO. For both prepolymer and one-shot foams, DABCO offers you important processing advantages. In one-shot systems based on crude isocyanates, it can now be used to give you both top performance and economy. DABCO-DMEA Catalysis. N,N-dimethylethanolamine is a low-cost amine which, teamed with DABCO, serves to neutralize the acidity of the crude isocyanates, thus freeing DABCO to catalyze polymerization at a desired rate.
