Power sans Soot for Pittsburgh AEC is negotiating formal-agreement with Duquesne for nation's first full-scale central nuclear power plant -pL_A\s are moving rapidly for the na-Mion's first full-scale nuclear power plar^t. Last October the AEC said it was working on a plan to build a power reaotor t o have a minimum output of 60,000 kw. At that time it said it warated joint participation with private indiustry. In December it renewed its request for private capital investment for obtaining first-hand knowledge of the technology involved. NJine major proposals were submitted to tlie AEC for participation in building and. operating the plant. Of these, the one- made b y Duquesne Light of Pittsburgh w a s chosen as being the most favorable to the Government. I ncluding revenues from the sale of steam generated b y the reactor, the DiKjuesne proposal will reduce b y about $ 3 0 million the amount t h e Government would have to spend if it undertook the full cost of the project— construction and five years of operation.
FOR THE
T h e proposed plant site is on land owned by D u q u e s n e near Pittsburgh. Reactor by W e s t i n g h o u s e . Westinghouse has a contract with A E C to develop, design, and construct t h e reactor portion of the plant. It is expected to generate sufficient heat to produce a O&rfder ^tHe^Duquemetprobosal^ minimum of 60,000 kw. of salable electricity in addition to meeting electrical requirements of the plant itself. T h e actual capacity of the reactor may turn out to be somewhat greater than this x% co$t^ to ,the;X?o\cemmtmtf. minimum, so D u q u e s n e will design its >renom£ generating plant with reserve capacity. T h e reactor to b e used is of the pressurized water type ( P W R ) . It will b e cooled and moderated by ordinary ?cosf^ of ^resea1*%h^deVelopnient^ water under pressure. T h e fuel will be slightly enriched uranium. This type of reactor was chosen since re- %pjr>rtibnroJFrthei search and development on it is more advanced than on other types. Westinghouse has experience with it in its building the reactor for the Nautilus
