Preface A new understanding o f how wood degrading agents attack wood, combined with escalating restrictions on traditional w o o d preservative chemicals, are the two primary issues that spurred the three co-editors' interests in producing this text and the associated A m e r i c a n Chemical Society ( A C S ) Cellulose, Paper, and Textile D i v i s i o n Symposium Downloaded by 80.82.77.83 on June 2, 2018 | https://pubs.acs.org Publication Date: March 31, 2003 | doi: 10.1021/bk-2003-0845.pr001

Current Knowledge of Wood Deterioration Mechanisms and Its Impact on Biotechnology and Wood Preservation. This symposium was held A p r i l 2001 in San Diego, California, at the A C S National Meeting. The success o f the symposium led to the approval by the A C S to develop this book. The objective o f this book is to provide an overall view o f our current understanding o f wood degradation processes and new developments in the rapidly changing field o f wood protection. The later is particularly important in light o f the increasing restrictions on the traditional wood preservatives, creosote, pentachlorophenol, and chromated copper arsenate, which currently account for about 9 5 % o f the w o o d preservatives used in North A m e r i c a . However, within two years o f the publication o f this text use o f these chemicals w i l l likely account for less than 50% o f the preservative market globally and, thus, the later part o f this text explores potential alternative biocides and protection methodology. In addition to chapters written by the symposium speakers, chapters were also contributed by those who did not speak at the symposium to provide an encompassing view o f this rapidly changing field. Their chapters include information ranging from wood preservative chemistry to marine borer biology. The chapters are arranged first to provide the reader with an under standing o f the organisms that cause deterioration and the mechanisms they employ i n breaking down wood. This is followed by methods used to detect deterioration or to identify the specific organism involved, and the final section discusses the protection o f w o o d products. It was an enjoyable and truly cooperative effort by a l l three editors to pull these chapters together into a comprehensive text. W i t h authors
