The first commercial realization of Secondary Neutral Mass Spectrometry, the ΙΝΑ 3 profiled its analytical capabilities at the 1985 Pittsburgh Conference, receiving rave reviews from show attendees. No wonder. The ΙΝΑ 3 couples ppm sensitivity with fast quantitative analysis. So it readily characterizes the distribution of elements in a multilayer sample. The sample is sputtered by low-energy ions extracted from a low-pressure plasma. This minimizes atomic mixing and thus ensures unparalleled depth resolution. The sputtered neutrals are ionized in the plasma and subsequently analyzed by the ΙΝΑ 3's quadrupole mass spectrometer. Use it to detect all elements and their isotopes from hydrogen up with comparable sensitivities.
