e would like to clarify our policy on preprints at Chemistry of Materials. Our official policy has been one of allowing the posting of preprints to servers such as arXiv, but we had always asked authors to alert us of the preprint upon submission. The goal of requesting this information was not to discourage authors from using arXiv, but to ensure that authors were posting their manuscripts to preprint servers accepted by the community. Copyright can be confusing, and as an example, many conference proceedings or extended abstracts are copyrighted, which would mean that a figure or text published in such a venue may not be reproduced in a future article. We have seen several such examples, and it is not a pleasant surprise for an author to learn that some of their data cannot be republished without permission from the copyright holder.

Authors are free to post their preprints on arXiv (https://arxiv.org), bioRxiv (http://biorxiv.org), and the new ACS preprint server that is soon to come online, chemRXiv (http://www.chemrxiv.org), without notifying the editor upon submission. Based upon feedback from authors and readers, we are further simplifying our prior publication policy (http://pubs. acs.org/page/cmatex/submission/prior.html). Authors are free to post their preprints on arXiv (https://arxiv.org), bioRxiv (http://biorxiv.org), and the new ACS preprint server that is soon to come online, chemRXiv (http://www.chemrxiv.org), without notifying the editor upon submission. We expect that our policy toward preprint servers will further evolve with the scientific community, but for the present time, we feel that by fully green-lighting these three preprint servers, there will be no confusion for authors. Upon publication in Chemistry of Materials, authors are advised to add a link from the preprint to the published paper via the Digital Object Identifier (DOI). For authors considering a different preprint server, please let the editor know before submission. As always, we look forward to hearing your thoughts.
