Proceedings of the LASST-ACSIS Joint Workshop on Interface Phenomena. Fundamental Concepts of Interfacial Chemistry and Physics The fifth joint workshop on interface phenomena organized by the Laboratory for Surface Science and Technology a t the University of Maine and the Atlantic Canada Center for Surface and Interface Science at Dalhousie University was held August 12-17,1990, in Bar Harbor, Maine. The LASST-ACSIS workshops are designed to bring together leading surface scientists in a relaxed informal setting to participate in frank open discussions of the critical issues in the field. Approximately 60 individuals from Europe, Canada, and the United States participated in the 1990 workshop. A number of themes were touched upon at the workshop including (i) the predictive capabilities of the finite cluster versus semiinfinite band structure models to describe surface properties, (ii) can chemical rules be established for surface reactions, (iii) the role of lateral many body forces in adsorbed systems. The collection of papers presented here attempts to report some of the concepts and differing viewpoints presented at the workshop. The organizers of the workshop hope that these proceedings will serve as a stimulus for new creative work in the area of surface and interfacial science. The organizing committee of the 1990 LASST-ACSIS workshop wishes to express their thanks to all workshop participants, the support staff of LASST, and especially Mrs. Barbara Deshane for her tireless effort which made the workshop a great success. The workshop is indebted to the Office of Naval Research for financially and inspirationally supporting the workshop.
