I
t is my pleasure to introduce invited contributions from the Japanese Society of Process Chemistry (JSPC). While serving on the board of JSPC from 2011 to 2016, I really felt the presence of process chemistry in Japan and thought that JSPC should be more recognized among the global process chemistry world. In 2016 I joined the Editorial Advisory Board (EAB) of OPR&D, and then the Editor-inChief, Dr. Kai Rossen, told me, “We are almost totally missing the great chemistry performed in Japan.” Since then, I have been striving to collect more submissions from Japan. A year later, during the EAB meeting, we were analyzing the results of geographical distribution. There were many discussions for each region, and one of the comments for Japan was, “Why is the number of publications from Japan remaining steady?”, which meant “Why is the number of publications from Japan not increasing?” However, that same month the special issue “The Story of the HIV Attachment Inhibitor BMS-663068” was published from process chemists at Bristol-Myers Squibb Company, which inspired me very much. I came up with the idea for this special issue by JSPC and initiated discussions with JSPC and Kai. My great thanks go to JSPC for all of these contributions to this special issue of OPR&D.
