The butadiene-styrene-vinylpyridine terpolymers possess certain outstanding advantages over GR-S which would recommend their use for many specialty applications. Their excellent flexcrack resistance and aging prqperties would encourage the use of these polymers in compounds for conveyer belts, soles and heels, hose, and pressure-sensitive adhesives. Although the results of this investigation demonstrated that the vinylpyridine terpolymers had advantages over GR-S in tensile, flex-crack resistance, rebound, and aging properties, their use in tires has not been recommended, chiefly because of their lack of compatibility with GR-S and natural rubber. Several attempts (IS) to apply the 75: 20: 5 butadiene-styrene-vinylpyridine terpolymer as a tread stock for a n S-6 carcass were not very successful because of the strong tendency for the treads t o separate from the carcass under test conditions of only short duration. It was believed that greater building tack would be necessary before vinylpyridine rubber could find extensive use in tires.
