T h e synthesis of vitamin A in a high Mate of purity was described in a recent issue of Helvetica CJtimicn Acta (32, 443-52 [1949]) b y a group of workers from the W a r n e r I n s t i t u t e for T h e r a peutic Research. Complete identity b e tween t h e n a t u r a l and synthetic product has b e e n established by chemical, physico-chemical, and biological m e t h o d s . A m e t h o d suitable for commercial p r o duction has also been worked o u t . Starting with a C\* ketone first d e scribed b y Heilbron. the researchers added two carbon atoms and obtained a mixture of vitamin A acid a n d ester which was successfully reduced to t h e vitamin b y t h e use of lithium a l u m i n u m hydride, a reducing agent which does not attack carbon-to-carbon double bonds. T h e end product had a p u r i t y of 50 t o 7nr/-aminobenzoic acid, are packaged in 1-millicurie a m o u n t s . T h e />-aminobcnzoic acid m a y b e obtained in vials containing 0.5 mc. activity. Handling charges a n d procurement procedures are as outlined in Circular E-39. ρ 2 Specific Activity

The first pharmaceutical product, vitamin A capsules, will be m a r k e t e d i n this coun try b y William R . W a r n e r & Co., I n c . Amide

T h e F a r c h a n Research Laboratories announces t h e availability of sodium amide for t h e first t i m e as a free flowing powder. I n this convenient form it is ready for i m m e d i a t e use. Sodamide should p r o v e of great interest as a valuable condensing agent in t h e m a n u facture of pharmaceuticals, perfume in termediates, fine chemicals, a n d general organic synthesis. I t s use is well known in such reactions as t h e Claisen conden sation, alkylations and acylations of ketones, animations, and ring closures, the manufacturer states. I» 5

Muscle Adenylic

Acid

Adenosine-5-phosphoric acid ( A M P ) , the adenine nucleotide usually called muscle adenylic acid, is now available from Schwarz Laboratories, I n c . M a d e by a process t h a t does not require the use of animal tissues, this basic constit uent of such vital co-enzymes as A T P and C o e n z y m e I is offered in virtually unlimited quantities. A n i m p o r t a n t bio chemical substrate, it has been used clinically in t h e t r e a t m e n t of cardiac af flictions, some types of r h e u m a t i c condi tions, and malnutrition. T h e isomeric nucleotide adenosine-3-phosphoric acid, yeast adenylic acid, is also m a d e by Schwarz. V 6
