Evening CHED 75th Anniversary Banquet, 6:30 p.m.

The CHED Social Hour and Banquet will be in the Riverview Room of the Hotel Monteleone, 214 Royal Street. The social hour begins at 6:30, followed by a traditional New Orleans dinner at 7:30. Purchase tickets in advance through ACS (see boxed New Orleans Information). After dinner Glenn Crosby will provide his version of Division history. Sunday, August 22

Morning A. Distance Learning in Chemistry Doris Kimbrough, Organizer, Presiding

This symposium will explore different methods of offering chemistry courses to students who do not (or cannot) attend on-site lectures and laboratories. Both successes and failures will be examined, with particular attention to the singular challenges of the chemistry laboratory. B. Demonstrations with Everyday Substances W. C. Deese, Organizer John J. Fortman, Organizer, Presiding

This program will feature demonstrations that use chemicals and supplies that may be purchased from grocery, hardware, garden, or drug stores as well as those that illustrate the chemistry of everyday technology.

A series of invited papers (presented in a tutorial fashion) will describe recent developments in fullerene chemistry. This symposium will lead off a series of multi-day, multidivision symposia on fullerenes.

Anna J. Harrison served the Division of Chemical Education in many roles, including chair in 1971 and as a member of the Journal’s Board of Publication. She was also President of ACS and of AAAS. She died in August 1998. Anna J. Harrison is shown addressing the audience at the Second Centennial of Chemistry celebrations that took place at Priestley House in Northumberland, Pennsylvania, in August 1974. These ceremonies were in conjunction with the Third Biennial Conference on Chemical Education (Pennsylvania State University, July 30–August 3, 1974) and commemorated the discovery of oxygen by Joseph Priestley on August 1, 1774.
