F L E X O L Plasticizer 13-13 (di-tridecyl p h t h a l a t e ) i s a n e w p r i m a r y plasticizer for v i n y l chloride resins a n d copolymers. New triol for firm to super-soft foams

F L E X O L 13-13 h a s excellent viscosity stabilizing a c t i o n i n plastisol s y s t e m s . I n i t i a l viscosity is higher t h a n t h a t o b t a i n e d w i t h o t h e r p h t h a l a t e esters, d u e t o t h e i n h e r e n t higher viscosity of t h e ester. I t s c o m b i n a t i o n of good electrical p r o p e r t i e s , v e r y low volatility, good h e a t s t a b i l i t y , a n d low m o i s t u r e e x t r a c t i o n m a k e t h i s n e w m a t e r i a l ideal for a p p l i c a t i o n s r e q u i r i n g effective oil and water resistance—high-tempera t u r e wire i n s u l a t i o n , g a s k e t i n g , a n d jacketing compounds. T h e basic need of t h e flexible p o l y e t h e r foam i n d u s t r y for a diversified interm e d i a t e h a s been m e t w i t h N I A X T r i o l LM-52. Using this material a n d varying t h e f o r m u l a t i o n slightly, i t is possible t o p r o d u c e flexible p o l y e t h e r foams for a wide r a n g e of end-uses. O n e of t h e m o r e i m p o r t a n t a d v a n t a g e s of N I A X T r i o l L M - 5 2 is i t s usefulness i n p r o d u c i n g foams w i t h v a r y i n g physical properties. I n addition, N I A X T r i o l L M - 5 2 c a n t o l e r a t e a wide r a n g e of t i n c a t a l y s t c o n c e n t r a t i o n s w i t h little or n o sacrifice of p r o p e r t i e s —a factor of m a j o r i m p o r t a n c e in t h e processing of flexible p o l y e t h e r foams. Lower inhibitor levels in improved acrylates C A R B I D E ' S c o n t i n u i n g policy of i m p r o v i n g t h e q u a l i t y of a c r y l a t e s h a s resulted in t h e d e v e l o p m e n t of n e w grades of e t h y l , b u t y l , a n d 2-ethylhexyl a c r y l a t e s —all w i t h lower c o n c e n t r a t i o n s of h y d r o q u i n o n e ( H Q ) or t h e m o n o m e t h y l e t h e r of h y d r o q u i n o n e ( M M H Q ) . Lower i n h i b i t o r levels offer several distinct advantages during production of latexes. F o r m u l a t o r s need less catalyst t o o v e r c o m e t h e i n h i b i t o r , polymerizations start faster, and the possibility of color d e v e l o p m e n t from t h e c a t a l y s t - i n h i b i t o r reaction is greatly reduced. T h e following t a b l e s u m m a r i z e s inhibitor levels for acrylic acid a n d i t s esters.
